Gail Frampton Lansdon ’56 has always painted a little bit. Throughout grammar and High School, she did a few pieces just for fun. But as some may remember, her first love was the theater.
After her marriage in late 1959, she was too busy with their horses, the ranch in Northern Nevada, raising children (4 of them) and pursuing and receiving her degree at University of Nevada, Reno, to spend much time with artistic endeavors. She took a few community college classes in the 60’s, painted two pieces in the 70’s, divorced and remarried in the 80’s and looked forward to retirement when she would have time to draw, paint and create sculptures.
Rainbow Bridge
And that is just what she did. Gail studied figure drawing in the South of France in ’98, oil painting at UNR in ’97, ‘98 and ‘99 and began to get serious about her work when she finally could call herself “retired”. She’s been represented by two different galleries, one in Sedona, AZ and one in Reno, NV, but finds she doesn’t like the discipline needed to keep work flowing to a gallery. She is, after all, “retired”! Therefore, she sells her own work, now, either from her Web Site, word of mouth or someone sees one of her pieces and says, “I love that. Will you sell it?”
Gail and her husband have a houseboat on Lake Powell and she paints every day when they are down there (weather permitting). In the winter, she enjoys painting the Aspen Trees of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and setting up and painting Still Lifes in her studio at home. She does gas welding a bit and enjoys creating metal sculptures as well as working in clay. This year, she tried a few portraits….but says, “I am a ‘work in progress’ in that area!”
Peace in Winter

Mike Rose '56

Mike Rose was a graphic designer for forty-plus years, doing mostly corporate work. He did a lot for Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki. He also did a big project for the Orange County Sheriffs when George Herbert Walker Bush (he was the first Bush president) was in town for a drug rally. Perhaps his most recognizable work is the Van's tennis shoe logo he designed some forty years ago and still in use today.

Mike has this to say about his high school days, "Miss Schubert and I were buds out in the art department. I had a lot to do with the design of the annual that first year. Then there were the sets for the senior play...lots of good memories. We had some good artists in those classes." He says, "...after so many years of art, I prefer to do other things these days...research, write, travel."

Mike also tells us that Bev Doolittle was a Matador but she was about eight years behind us. She is now a world-famous artist. By the age of fifteen, Bev entered her first art contest, sponsored by the San Gabriel Historical Society. Her high school art teacher noted the talent that Doolittle possessed, and suggested that she apply for a scholarship to the Art Center College of Design, in Los Angeles. Bev won the scholarship, and began attending classes there, while still in high school. I wonder if she also had Miss Schubert as a teacher? The Art of Bev Doolittle

I worked for 30 years at a commercial interior design and food facility planning company in LA. In 1994 my wife, Leslie, and I moved to Bandon, OR taking a design client with us. While doing design we developed a cranberry farm and grow berries for Ocean Spray. Retired? No, busy, busy, busy!

Enjoying his retirement, has made time for Frank to go through his desk, and he has sent us a couple new photos of the years at Washington Elementary School. We appreciate the photos, but there remains much mystery..........as who are these scruffy little kids? Our only hint is that Frank's mom wrote 'Miss Edgeworth' across the back of the top photo........ I hope that Mary Fraizer can figure this all out for us?

Blue Oak
Marian lives in Roseville, California where on April 4th and 5th, 2009, there will be a showing of The Artists of Timber Creek Gallery. Marian's painting 'Blue Oak' was selected as the Signature Painting for the show. She has been in charge of their fundraising project, proceeds of which support art programs in the local elementary schools...this year they painted mailboxes (11 of them, each done by a different artist) and they turned out wonderfully!!!
Donner Lake
Marian was another student of Mrs. Schubert at SGHS, and is now still substituting in the schools in Roseville...She really enjoys being with the kids without having to do lesson plans, paperwork and meetings. She is considering job-sharing for next year...time will tell. We will install more of her paintings soon...watch for them!
